Brrzzzzzzt!

Today has got to have been the longest day of my life..

I got only a few hours of sleep last night. My back was hating on me and nothing I did would ease the pain. Finally, I managed to nab those few hours of sleep thanks to my new best friend, Percocet. I love you, Percocet!

I would've slept in except that my son was in the 3rd grade spelling bee and I had to haul my cookies down to the school at 9 AM to beam with motherly pride. This, of course, meant dealing with the morning traffic to the bathroom. That, of course, means that I didn't see the bathroom until the kids left for school. Luckily, the have to be there at 8 AM.

I dragged my weary lil behind into the shower, hoping to either wake up or ease my muscle spasm-y back. I managed to somewhat ease the back. Ain't nothin' was waking me up.

That is, until I saw the time. I got out and dressed at 8:45 AM. I really had to haul it to the school, fighting with my son's mini-umbrella-- since I lost my nice long cane umbrella and haven't gotten around to replacing it-- and getting soaked in the process. Two showers in one day, one after the other.

I arrived with five minutes to spare and used that time to give directions to my mom, via cell phone, through the school. It's not a large school, just a confusing one. I sat down, held a seat and waited. Mom came just seconds before it was to start.

At first, it was a bit dull. I held my breath each time The Boy had to spell a word-- he seemed to get all of the words he got wrong on the study sheet. It went slow for a while. The Boy got cocky and pulled a me, he misspelled an easy word.

He was not pleased. Actually, that's an understatement. He was royally pissed and wanted to demand another chance. I had to drag him out of the room to calm him down.

By the time we got back in, an unbelievable amount of kids had been picked off. The Boy messed up after the half-way point-- there were 27 kids, the top fifth of the class-- but when we returned, there were maybe only 6 kids left. I looked around and saw crying kids. What the hell happened while I was gone? It was only a few minutes!

I sat down and mom filled me in. The words were flying, each harder than the last. Nerves were shot. Kids were misspelling left and right. The air was thick with tension. It had finally gotten interesting.

At the end, there were only 3 girls left. They'd run out of 3rd grade vocab words and now had to switch to 4th grade vocab. It was all over soon after, only one little girl victorious and grinning from ear to ear. The other two looked like they wanted to cry, stomp, and pout. Until they got trophies and their pictures taken. All were happy then.

And I got to go home and take a nap. With the cat. Until I had to get ready for work, that is. See? I told you it was a long day.

Stomping, pouting and crying - yep sounds like a sucessful spelling bee to me. Atleast it sounds like all the ones I was ever in...
